AFP Austin's annual One Day Conference will equip fundraisers of all levels of experience and from all types of organizations with the knowledge and connections needed to create change in their work, lives, and community. The conference offers robust CFRE crediting, and attendees able to choose from sessions with subject matter experts who will offer guidance and advice specifically relevant to them based on organization size, development team size, and years of experience.

This year's event, titled Elevate Together: The Power of Fundraising, is intended to empower fundraisers and nonprofit professionals with the tactile, timely, and relevant education they need to create a big impact in their community.

Education sessions offered during the event will fall within one of the following areas:

Integrating IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access) and belonging into fundraising systems and teams: Creating a culture of belonging and implementing IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access) principles into teams and systems is imperative to the future of fundraising. AFP-GAC is looking for sessions that highlight opportunities for Austin-area fundraisers to explore and learn “better practices” to operationalize IDEA and belonging work into their teams.

Old Meets the New: How to succeed in fundraising with traditional and new strategies: An evolving philanthropic landscape requires innovation and traditional relationships building skills.  AFP-GAC is looking for sessions that highlight traditional techniques and modern methods that can be implemented into new and innovative fundraising strategies that meet the needs of our local community. Prospective speakers should consider the questions, what is something tried and true that should always stay the same, what are some new ways that fundraisers should embrace, and how should technology be used to enhance foundational fundraising skills.

Creating Impact: Collaborative Efforts of Fundraisers, Nonprofits, Funders, and Community Leaders: Creating a culture of philanthropy in Austin and the greater Austin area takes EACH and EVERYONE. AFP-GAC is looking for sessions that offer insight and instruction into how nonprofits can work together internally across departments and externally across the community to create long lasting impact.

Productivity Through Self-Awareness and the Working Genius Framework

In the dynamic world of nonprofit fundraising, leadership doesn't only come from the top. This session will delve into the importance of self-awareness in leadership, emphasizing its ethical implications for the people we lead and those we serve. Using the Working Genius framework, which identifies six types of geniuses present in all work environments, we will explore how understanding and leveraging these geniuses can enhance fundraising efforts within teams, with boards, and in leadership dynamics. Participants will gain practical insights into how self-awareness in leadership can mitigate biases, create more inclusive and effective teams, and ultimately, amplify their organization's impact.

Room Session Title Speaker(s)
Vaier Hall Conference Room Sincere Stories, Significant Impact: Ethical Storytelling for Nonprofits Catherine Ashton and Melinda Chow

The words we use matter. The stories we tell have an impact. For many nonprofits, our stories are a critical currency: they are how we brand our work, shine a light on our successes, and draw in supporters. And, stories are also a critical way we integrate social justice into our fundraising - and overall culture and work.

This session explores how nonprofits of all sizes can integrate ethical storytelling into their work, and ground their organizational narratives in race, equity, and social justice. Participants will explore the ways in which we talk, teach, and practice nonprofit work can uphold harmful systems of oppression - or use their writing to further anti-racist, Community-Centric fundraising, and ethical storytelling principles. From word choices to storytelling, we’ll delve into how to deconstruct our narratives, and identify alternatives we can start using right away, including:

-Defining ethical storytelling and people-first language within the context of diverse missions and organizations;
-Exploring case studies and examples of how organizations have applied principles into their work (and received funding) to illustrate the power of truthful, elevating storytelling.
-Discussing how to move from the desire to incorporate ethical storytelling to tactics that can be applied to any mission, organization, or specific grant opportunity.
This session will be facilitated using Liberating Structures practices to create an interactive learning environment that allows for all voices, learning styles, and processing styles to participate.

Change is hard. And making systemic changes at your nonprofit that help build more personal relationships with donors at scale can feel like boiling the ocean. Effective fundraising today’s world requires increased team collaboration, integrated technology, and real-time data insights. The amount of change can feel overwhelming, and it’s difficult to know where to start.

Maturity Models are designed provide a structured approach to systemically leveling up your organization’s performance over time. The importance of a maturity model lies in its ability to provide an objective assessment of your organization’s current capabilities, as well as a roadmap for improving those capabilities over time. Maturity models are often used to benchmark your current level of maturity against industry best practices, and then identify areas for improvement.

The Responsive Maturity Model is designed to guide you, step by step, through the stages required to un-silo your data, increase team effectiveness, create personalized connections with each donor, and grow giving at scale.

This session will highlight the Black Professional Alliance (BPA) SPARK Program. This project is designed to help supplement and ratify the support systems for Texas public universities in the wake of SB17. The primary goal is to restructure and sustain identity-based student programs, particularly those affected by the disinvestment in formally recognized DEI programs.

The program explores mentorship and advisory support aimed at fostering a welcoming environment for BIPOC students. The program will provide a framework for creating a sustainable community-support model for under-resourced student programming.

To accomplish this, SPARK leverages the initial dollars to attract additional investments from donors and sponsors committed to supporting inclusive and comprehensive educational experiences. This is a unique, collaborative, approach to fundraising for equity-centered student support programs.

AI and automation tools are all the rage right now, and many nonprofits are wondering if - or how - to adopt them. The fact is, AI is here to stay, and can offer fundraisers a powerful, affordable and accessible tool. However, jumping into AI without a clear plan can lead to disappointing results. In this session, mega-nerds Cat and Kim will guide participants on what comes before using AI tools in fundraising and donor communications, from why you’ll always need meaningful messaging, to how to understand ethical concerns.

Participants will explore:
How to identify what problems or opportunities AI can address within day-to-day fundraising strategies, rather than adopting tech for tech’s sake.;
Why traditional fundraising practices still matter more than ever when adopting AI tools ;
What ethical implications AI presents, and how to address them; and
How to actually use AI tools day-to-day in new, unexpected ways.

Participants will leave with an idea of how to incorporate AI into their day-to-day fundraising and will have created a practical checklist of how to adopt the right tech tools for the right reasons.

Meet Your 2024 One-Day Conference Chairs!

 Lila and Jenny have been in fundraising cahoots since January 2020 when their paths first crossed at Communities In Schools of Central Texas. They were quite a team, working closely together to raise funds for emergency COVID relief and school supplies. After a brief professional bifurcation, they were gleefully reunited in April 2023 when Jenny returned to Communities In Schools for a second time.

“The opportunity to work with Lila will always be too appealing to pass up,” Jenny says. “I knew this joint headshot would come in handy someday,” Lila says. Since 2020, this dynamic duo has worked hand in hand to raise millions of dollars for Central Texas students.

Lila and Jenny’s fundraising leadership journeys mirror one another. From development associates to development directors they have both crossed through many fundraising rites of passage. These experiences fuel their dedication to helping create learning and wellness opportunities for all fundraisers.
